The Prophets who Don’t Do Anything

The modern prophet Larry the Cucumber once sang an anthem with his band of misfit pirates. It started like this:

“Well, I’ve never been Greenland and I’ve never been to Denver, and
I’ve never buried treasure in St. Louis or St. Paul, and I’ve never been
to Moscow and I’ve never been to Tampa, and I’ve never been to Boston in
the fall.”

“’cause we’re the Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything! We just stay home
and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we’ll just tell you
..”

 “We don’t do anything.

If you had kids in the late 90’s (or you were one), that song is now stuck in your head for the rest of the day. You’re welcome!

I caught myself humming it today as I finished this Sunday’s sermon, “Who Would Tell Him?” We’re back in 1 Kings 21, and Ahab and Jezebel are up to their old ways. Ahab wants his neighbor’s vineyard, and when he can’t have it, he goes home, lies down on his bed, and sulks. Jezebel takes care of the rest, and an innocent man is murdered.

Then God sends Elijah back to Jezreel, back under the shadow of the queen whose angry threats once sent him running into the wilderness.

All through this series, we’ve watched Elijah say hard things to the scariest people in the room. So how bold are we with God’s truth? Sometimes fear keeps us quiet. Other times we’ve just gotten comfortable, more like Larry and his crew, lounging at home while the adventure passes us by.

What could happen when the worst person you know hears the truth from you? Come find out this Sunday!
