This is the Life

Once a year I head to Gateway Christian School to participate in a session of their life skills class for high school seniors. I pull my old Jeep CJ out of the garage and use it to teach them how to check and change their oil, jump a dead battery, and change a tire. I don’t just stand at a whiteboard in a classroom; instead, I hand the students a wrench and ask them to crawl under the jeep.

The day isn’t really about vehicle maintenance; it’s an opportunity to learn by doing. My hope is that by getting a little grease on their school uniform, they might remember the lesson after they’ve forgotten the lecture.

Paul closes his letter to the Philippians the same way. Rather than simply repeating everything he has taught, he shows u what a gospel-shaped life actually looks like. He applies the truths he’s been teaching to everyday life…to our relationships, our anxieties, our possessions, and even the legacy we leave behind. In many ways, Philippians 4 is the hands-on lesson of the entire book.
