Born For Adversity

There’s something special about a friend who appears when life is falling apart. When we are crushed by devastating news or agonizing loss. Proverbs tells us that “a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Prov. 17:17). We know there’s a difference between acquaintances, fair-weather friends, and the deep, supportive relationships of a few close companions. That sort of love is rare and valuable.

The church in Philippi proved to be that kind of friend to Paul. Consider the difficulty of communication in the Roman world. It was likely 40 days to get a letter from Philippi to Rome. Yet we can infer from the book of Philippians that four trips happened between that city and Paul to offer companionship, financial aid, and support. No wonder Paul opens his letter by thanking God in his prayers for these people!

This Sunday, we’ll consider what it means to truly be partnered in the gospel. Is it sufficient to believe in Christ? For our eternity, yes. But to live the best life possible here on earth? More may be required.
